Mr. Ocasio is the Executive Director of La Casa de Don Pedro, a community based service and development agency in Newark, New Jersey since 1998.
For the last twenty years, Mr. Ocasio guided the agency through phenomenal growth as well as through the recent economic downturn and today it is postured to advance it mission even further. After an initial period of substantial growth, La Casa sustained and adapted its programmatic efforts to address community needs during the recession period as exemplified by its providing foreclosure counseling, restructuring underwater mortgages and returning abandon buildings to livable homes.
Today, La Casa is postured to advance and expand the important work it does for the Greater Newark community. In this current year, La Casa has added critical program to its portfolio; by taking on the Head Start program that will expand and enrich its successful Pre-K program; bolstered its programming for out of school year with the Youth Opportunity Program; expanded its housing and community building activities to East Orange and supplemented its weatherization energy conservation efforts with a lead remediation program.
The services and programs La Casas provides are comprehensive and extensive as well as strengthen by its emphasis on community building and advocacy.
Mr. Ocasio has been and is actively involved in a number of local, state and national initiatives that deal with housing and community development, the City‘s master plans, neighborhood planning & development, and the development of the Prudential Arena. La Casa and Mr. Ocasio are also engaged in fostering local leadership, preserving and expanding the social safety net, children’s and educational matters and public safety concerns, such as the supporting the Civilian Police Review Board and the recent water lead issues.
Mr. Ocasio has broad and extensive experiences in organizational development, housing and community development at the local, state, regional and international levels that he bring to bear to Newark and New Jersey.
